Job Description:

Our niche fit out/fabrication client have a requirement for a Head of Projects to join them on a permanent basis. They are based in East London, with this role working remotely for the foreseeable future.


Our client delivers bespoke design/fit out/fabrication projects into the arts and heritage sector. They have 5 departments that are collaboratively responsible for the delivery of these projects. They are project, draughting, production, site and general operations – the five heads of department are part of the senior leadership team with the business directors.

They require an experienced project professional to join their organisation and head up the project department. Leading a team of 5 FTE (plus a variable freelance workforce) you will be responsible for project tendering/costing, procurement, project delivery and business development/growth. You will provide leadership and support to the team, mentoring and coaching project managers and working closely with the other departments throughout the tender, design, production and delivery process.


This is not a site-based role.


Requirements and responsibilities:

  • Ability to lead the Project Team in communication with all associated internal departments, incorporating their needs and schedules with the timelines and costs for all project plans, ensuring these are aligned with the overall business plan.
  • Compliance with contractual matters relative to FSL, keeping abreast of relevant contractual law.
  • Ability to develop, review and maintain departmental policies, processes and procedures, seeking continual improvements in internal communications and cross-departmental co-operation and collaboration. Ensuring consistently high standards of client liaison.
  • Leadership of the projects department, with responsibility for the department’s performance including recruitment, training, staff development, coaching, 121’s and appraisals.
  • With the Senior Management Team, development and communication of mid to long term plans, representing the Project Team’s stake in the Company’s Strategic Plan.
  • With the Senior Management Team, preparation, implementation and monitoring of annual budgets, ensuring targets are met and revenue flows maximised whilst minimising fixed costs.


Essential skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable full lifecycle project management experience in a construction/fit out/fabrication environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of tendering/costing of projects.
  • Strong leadership skills including mentoring and coaching.
  • Excellent client engagement skills and experience.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience of third-party supplier management.
  • Strategic thinker – ability to look forward and work towards improving client relationships and delivery opportunities.
  • A strong collaborative working approach.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Experience working in a SME environment.
  • Experience of exhibition fabrication – beneficial but not essential.
  • An understanding of the Arts and Heritage environment – beneficial but not essential.
