Job Description:

Our specialist engineering client have an immediate requirement for a Project Manager with experience delivering technical component design and development projects on a fixed term contract until March 2022. This role is based full time in Farnborough.

**This is NOT an engineering, manufacturing or production role – the focus is on the development stage into commercial viability**

Our client is an engineering technology organisation that utilises advanced materials in the design, development, and manufacture of specialist components for the aerospace industry.

They have recently won a contract to design and develop a demonstrator landing gear component within a 9-month timeframe. They require an experienced project manager to join them and lead the development from the design stage to proof of concept/viability stage. This role will work closely with the small inhouse team (design, manufacturing, other specialist resources), external prime aerospace partners and suppliers.

The main output for this role is the demonstration of the technological and commercial viability of the materials in the manufacture and production of the specialist component.

Due to the nature of the role and the tight delivery timeframe, this role would suit candidates with demonstrable experience within the aerospace environment, who have previously delivered specialist component/equipment development projects.

This is not a design role; the focus is on driving the development to precertification technical and commercial viability.

Key tasks:

  • Ensure the successful delivery of the project to meet customer expectations and clients business objectives
  • Act as the prime project interface to customers & suppliers
  • Create and maintain the project budget and master schedule and drive through to completion with cross-functional teams
  • Create and maintain a Risk Register to identify key project and delivery risk areas; and develop and track mitigating actions for the team
  • Negotiate and acquire the necessary resources to achieve the project objectives
  • Track and report on progress to plan (time, cost and quality); insure KPIs are maintained and reported on a regular basis
  • Establish and communicate clear priorities among project activities
  • Keep all stakeholders informed of progress and issues; support frequent project status reviews to customer and client Senior Management
  • Involve functional expertise in design reviews and key decisions as well as risk strategies
  • Contribute to the development of business processes as the company grows
  • Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required in line with the level of responsibility of the post and in order to meet the changing needs of the organisation.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable project management experience delivering specialist component or equipment projects within a technical environment (ideally aerospace, also open to defence, energy and/or ground-based transport development).
  • Demonstrable experience working from the preliminary design, through development to certification stages.
  • A strong commercial acumen – cost, viability, and manufacturing.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills – ability to engage across internal teams and external partners.
  • Excellent reporting skills.
  • A recognised project management qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Engineering degree or equivalent experience in a business or technically related discipline
  • Experience of TRL & MRL raising development programmes – preferred.
  • Familiarity with AS9100 or ECSS – preferred.
  • Able to hit the ground running, use own initiative.
  • Comfortable delivering to tight time scales, in a time pressured environment.
  • Strong leadership, motivation and influencing skills.

One or two stage interview process dependent on candidate. Candidates must be immediately available.
